The Last Ocean Liners to Australia & Around-the-World

Some shipping lines connected Europe or the Americas with Australia via wonderful, long voyages across the Pacific. Others extended their Europe to Asia and South Pacific services to circle the globe, since the route out via Suez or South Africa was of about equal distance to the route home via Panama or vice versa.

From the 1950s to 1970s some of these lines benefited from the Australian government's subsidized immigration scheme. Still other companies had interests worldwide and so dispatched all or part of their ocean liner fleets on full around-the-world voyages.
